This was the ninth pregnancy of a 38-year-old woman, with no history of radiation or teratogenic exposure during early pregnancy. She underwent first routine first trimester ultrasound at 16 weeks of gestation. In an attempt to clarify the nature of the spinal deformity, three-dimensional ultrasound of the fetal spine was performed. Based on the ultrasound findings, the woman opted for elective termination of pregnancy.

At 17 weeks, transverse view of the fetal head. We can see bilateral ventriculomegaly.

There is severe disruption  of the normal spine with kyphoscoliosis and segmentation abnormalities.
